FLOODWOOD MOUNTAIN hike

Sep 21, 2023 (Thu) - FLOODWOOD MOUNTAIN hike. Interesting drive on dirt roads - there are a couple primitive campsites before the parking area. The hike starts on the continuation of the dirt road, soon come to a gate. At 0.7 miles the route turns R off the dirt road. There was a pile of lumber here destined for boardwalk to be placed over a long muddy area ~0.25 miles further up the trail. Gentle at first, the trail gets steeper the further you go. Woods are exclusively hardwoods (maples, beech, yellow birch) until close to the top. At the actual summit (2304') there is a small view E - we could see Rock Pond where we had paddled the day before. Continuing on an unmarked path beyond the summit, one eventually comes out some open rock with a wide view to the S - could see the S end of Rollins Pond, Wolf Pond, Tupper Lake, Blue Mtn, Mt Arab, & Mount Matumbla. No bad bugs, temp rising thru the 50s to mid-60s, fall foliage starting to look good. 4 miles, 790' gross el gain, 3.4 hours.

Sep 18, 2006 - FLOODWOOD MOUNTAIN hike. Views from the summit of Rollins Pond; Long Pond, St. Regis & Debar Mts. to the NE. From the S summit, open rock affords views toward Tupper Lake. Maples offered some good late summer fall foliage colors. 670' net el. gain, 4 miles, 2.8 hours.                EAST & WEST PINE PONDS canoeing. Start on East Pine Pond which is right next to Floodwood Rd. Short but very steep up & down carry to scenic West Pine - overlooked by Floodwood Mtn. E half is state land (a campsite is on N shore), W half belongs to Floodwood Boy Scouts. Investigated a small wood tower which unfortunately for me had a hornet's nest at the top - I scooted down the steps & dove into the water (good thing the camera in my pocket is waterproof) but still ended up with a dozen stings, somehow hurt my Achilles tendon in the process too & going back over the carry was not easy. 3 miles, 1.5 hours.
