Visited the new REI store in West Hartford CT - disappointing selection in paddlesports - ~10 rec kayaks - the only interesting one was a Dagger Katana 10.4 - & forget canoeing... More Connecticut & New England reports & info at  Facebook: QuinetucketWanderings

JESSUP RIVER & INDIAN LAKE CANOEING

Image
April 25, 2016 - Jessup River upstream from Jessup River Rd (dirt). 0.9 miles to foot of rapids. 3 deer ran across the rapids in front of me! 0.2 mile carry (part bushwhack, part on logging road)) around the rapids. Mossy Vly Brook comes in at 1.9 miles. 0.4 miles further up the Jessup saw an otter run along the bank & dive into the water. Carried around a logjam & stopped at another. Lots of shallow sandy-bottomed sections. Poked up shallow Mossy Vly on way back. 5.1 miles, 4.1 hours. Perkins Clearing Road & Jessup River Road open & in good shape - usually closed until sometime in May for mud season. May 23, 2010 - JESSUP RIVER & INDIAN LAKE paddling from Jessup River Rd (dirt) near Perkins Clearing in the central Adirondacks.  Spotted cars at the Indian Lake state boat launch, paid day use fee.  Some blackflies & mosquitoes at start but minimal during trip - started out wearing my Original Bugshirt but eventually took it off.

At Hammonasset State Park in coastal CT.  I have been enjoying this daily for a while now.  Better than TV & no commercials!  Live cam .  1st egg seen April 20 (last year it was April 19), 2nd egg early April 23.

Paddling the rivers of the New Jersey Pine Barrens

Image
The lakes up north may still be frozen over but, if you have to paddle, the rivers of southern NJ are wonderful.  Generally, a shuttle is warranted - paddling upstream can be done but is hard work - I know from experience.  The wild areas of the Pine Barrens are not what most folks think of when it comes to NJ.  The Fall is also a great time to visit. The Mullica River. The Oswego River: A VIDEO The Wading River:  Backcountry camping area on the Mullica River. The Pinelands National Reserve is approximately 1.1 million acres and spans portions of seven counties and all or part of 56 municipalities. The reserve occupies 22% of New Jersey's land area and it is the largest body of open space on the Mid-Atlantic seaboard between Richmond and Boston. June 18-21, 2022 - Forest fire over 13,000 acres - Mullica River area closed between Atsion & Batsto. June 10 (Fri), 2022 - MULLICA RIVER.  Atsion to Pleasant Mills.  My favorite Pine Barrens river.

April skiing in the southern Green Mountains of Vermont

Image
The high elevations (well over 2,000') in the Woodford/Searsburg/Somerset area hold snow into April - 2 feet on April 7, 2018.  Portions of the Appalachian/Long Trails and Catamount Trail pass through the area.
