CHENANGO RIVER paddling.

Jun 14, 2015 - CHENANGO RIVER from Rt.80 in Sherburne NY (gauge @ 2.95') to River Rd off Rt.23 in Norwich NY (gauge @ 4.8'). A semi-epic adventure. Mostly quickwater, some riffles, maybe 3 Class I rapids; mostly clear but occasionally there are downed trees or strainers requiring good maneuvering skills. Rural, very little development seen from the river, some road noise. Well into the trip trees were down river-wide - took a narrow channel to the L & still ended up having to do a short 50' portage back to the main river. Another area of strainers appeared dangerous so took a narrow channel to the R which was mostly clear but in a calm section tree debris blocked the way & required a lift-over or at least a scootch-over, under a rr bridge & soon back to the main channel. A rapid had strainers at its foot that required a strong maneuver R. Finished with a nice bouncy rapid under the Rt.23 bridge. Beaver, ducks, gbh, flicker. Forget-me-nots, yellow flag, dames rocket. 15.7 miles, 5.8 hours. Dagger Alchemy 14 kayak worked out great.
