FOXY BROWN XC SKI LOOP in Piseco NY

 


Feb 3, 2021 - Skied the newly refurbished Foxy Brown Loop at the Piseco Airport on Wednesday. The trail is now groomed and there was about 3 or 4 inches of fresh powder on a 2+ foot base. All the usual blowdown we would normally have encountered is gone and there is a new ski bridge going across Fall Stream. They have also rerouted the western end of the ski trail, which used to go through a messy marsh area. It now follows the N-P tail for 8/10 of a mile. We skied the 6.3 miles with 320 feet elevation gain in 3-3/4 hours. Very smooth skiing.

Jan 26, 2016:Ski around Piseco Airport on the 6-mile Foxy Brown Ski Loop with a side-trip on the snowmobile trail to Mud Lake. The ranger had been in earlier that day on a snowmobile to do some trail work.









2020 - We are SO thrilled to have the Foxey Brown Trail refurbished! It took a great deal of work and cooperation between DEC and the Piseco Lake Association to bring this gem back to life. The two organizations collaborated and made the following improvements to the 6.2 mile loop located within the Jessup River Wild Forest by the Piseco Airport: brushing and blowdown removal, installation of new signage, trail and mileage markers, removal of foot snags and larger rocks, and replacement of a 25 foot trail bridge. In addition, the PLA provided funding to construct a 150 foot trail bridge over wetlands with benches to enjoy a view of the mountains. (According to DEC, this is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the Adirondacks).


Jan 1, 2005 - PISECO AIRPORT/FOXY BROWN LOOP xc ski. Temp in the 30s. From the airport parking lot follow the S side of the field going E til a sign points you into the woods for the 6 mile loop. Avg. 6" of snow in woods, a bit icy in ski tracks, better off-trail - thinner but quite skiable around airport - will make for nice base for any future powder. Looks like loop trail has been recently cleared. Lots of animal tracks. Only had time to ski part of the loop because the boss wanted me to be at work by noon. Karhu Dorado skis with Rottefella Chili cable bindings & leather boots .

Dec 9, 2002 - PISECO AIRPORT LOOP xc skiing. Temps in the Adirondacks well below zero this morning - makes it a bit harder to decide where to go. Sunny, clear skies, tho. From Rt.8, take Old Piseco Rd for just under 2 miles then R to parking at airport. 10" snow. Bumpy terrain (as opposed to hilly). Bear tracks. Made hot Gatorade in a Nalgene bottle (the ones made of Lexan don't hold odors & can stand extreme temperatures) then placed it inside a Granite Gear Aquasack - still hot hours later (OR Water Bottle Parka is another good choice). 6.5 miles, 3 hrs. Fischer Rebound skis .

Boreas Ponds Tract info . Seasonal access issues .  June 20-22, 2023 (Tue-Thu) - BOREAS & WHITE LILY PONDS paddling, hiking, & camping. High Peaks Wilderness. Highs in the 70s, lows in the upper 40s. Light mosquito activity at times, a moderate amount of young deer flies (not biting), and black flies are over with (they are hanging out on cooler mountain tops).  Day 1 - Drove 6 miles on Gulf Brook Rd (dirt/gravel) to the 4 Corners parking area (5 of the 15 spots were taken). Wheeled the boats ~1 mile on dirt/gravel road to the lean-to, white-throated sparrows sang along the way, & set up camp. Saw a ruffed grouse in the lean-to clearing. Wild strawberries too. There is a well-hidden thunderbox privy - it took a while to find it - it is in another clearing NW of the lean-to. The Ranger stopped by as we had lunch. Paddled the irregular perimeter of BP. UPPER HUDSON RIVER and OPALESCENT RIVER paddling, skiing, Adirondack Park.

Sep 24 (Sat) - BLACKWELL STILLWATER on the Hudson River, plus Goodnow River. From the parking area on Drakes Mill Road, we wheeled the boats 0.3 miles to the Polaris Bridge, then L or N on a path between a campsite & the river 100' to put in. Paddled upstream, soon passing the mouth of the Goodnow River. Then had to paddle hard to get up a short rapid. Turned around after going ~1 mile at the bottom of a long rapid - nice spot tho. Back downstream with a view of Polaris Mtn & up the Goodnow. Up & over a beaver dam, then just a little further to a rocky rapid after going 0.6 miles from the Hudson. Back to the Hudson with another good view of Polaris Mtn & a large raptor flew by & landed on a tree branch. Swift current below the Polaris Bridge then flatwater for about 2 miles - now in the Hudson Gorge Wilderness . HUDSON RIVER paddling, Thurman to Hadley.

The Bear Slides on Butternut Brook is a half mile hike from the river at Darlings Ford. In summer, tubing is popular in the 2nd half of this trip. Oct 20, 2021 - Hadley gauge at 3.8' - a very nice level.  Sunny & temp rising into the lower 70s.  Some very nice fall foliage in the yellow/orange range but past peak for reds.  Moving water, fast water, riffles up to 1' - the current made it easy to keep a 3.5-4mph pace.  Steep hills on both sides.  Bald eagles, lots of Canada geese, a lone merganser.  14.5 miles, 5 hours (incl an hour-long lunch break near 1000 Acres Ranch).  However, what may have been a perfect day of paddling was diminished by a reminder that not all folks are having an awesome day - enough said - details below but BE WARNED , it ain't pretty . *After paddling downstream for 10 minutes, we spotted some debris on river R that looked like some clothing, a dummy, or something.  After a closer look, it was determined to be a dead male with an apparent se
