SPY LAKE, SPY LAKE OUTLET, PISECO OUTLET, MUD LAKE paddling

June 26, 2016 - SPY LAKE, SPY LAKE OUTLET, PISECO OUTLET, MUD LAKE. Drove private road to Spy Lake but after dropping off the gear one should park on Rt.8 & walk the 0.4 miles back to the lake (or risk getting a ticket). Some camps in the area of the put-in beach but most of the shore is undeveloped. Went around the lake the long way then went down the outlet which had wooded shores but soon led out into open marsh. Got out for 2 beaver dams & one downed tree, very narrow in parts but very interesting. 1.1 miles from the lake, reached Piseco Outlet, a much wider stream. Downstream 0.2 miles then E into Mud Lake Outlet for 0.5 miles to Mud Lake which has very little dry shoreline but we did find a dry spot for lunch; spotted some rose pogonia. Back to Spy Lake & out. Mostly in Silver Lake Wilderness. Deer, loons on Spy Lake (1 on nest). Not too buggy. 8.7 miles, 4.5 hours. Note that there is no access to Piseco Outlet below the Rt.10 bridge since both shores are on private land - many years ago I did carry to the bottom of the rapids & paddled to Mud & Spy but that carry has posted signs now - the route was described in the 1st edition of Barbara McMartin's book Fun on Flatwater.
