HENNIG PRESERVE hiking & skiing

 


Dec 30, 2016 - HENNIG PRESERVE & HOMESTEAD COUNTY FOREST ski, in western Saratoga County.  12-15", 6" of new powder on a good base - very good skiing.  Looped on the yellow trail; also white & blue trails on eskers, red trail to vly/pond.  Elevations 1,300' to 1,650'.  Nice views of Cadman Creek in the county forest.  Easy intermediate N of Centerline Rd, intermediate to the S.  6.6 miles, 4.6 hours. 



Jan 27, 2014 - HENNIG PRESERVE, western Saratoga County, just outside the Adirondack Blue Line, elevations over 1,500'.  Skied most of the trails N of Centerline Rd incl. new blue loop, all loops counterclockwise.  Very good to excellent skiing, mostly silky smooth but did hit 4 or 5 rocks (mostly on northern white trail that goes over an interesting esker).  Up to 10" of snow, mostly powder.  1" fresh powder in tracks from previous skiers, did have to break trail some of the time tho.  2 hours. 

Dec 31, 2013 - HENNIG PRESERVE & HOMESTEAD COUNTY FOREST.  Have explored it on foot, now time to ski.  10"-15" - very good skiing.  Broke trail S of Centerline Rd doing a counterclockwise loop.  At junction of yellow & blue trails headed S, crossed Packer Rd (dirt) & picked up the scenic new trail along Cadman Creek.  Returned to Hennig & green trail.  Stream crossings still abit on the wet side.  Lunch at the cars then skied all trails in the N section of the preserve with a stop at the pond.  Stream crossings bridged.  Most trails intermediate, yellow trail novice, blue trail over the esker the most challenging.  5.2 hours. 

Dec 16, 2012 - HENNIG PRESERVE & HOMESTEAD COUNTY FOREST from County Line Rd in the Town of Providence.  A coating of snow.  SW on yellow trail, R on blue on top of esker, dropped down steeply off esker to junction with yellow trail.  R or S from this junction & soon cross Packer Rd (4WD) then follow orange surveyor's tape markings to Cadman Creek.  This lovely brand new trail then follows the creek upstream mostly well above it.  County forest trail markers face in the opposite direction that I went?!  A couple of beaver dams create a pond on the creek.  Trail drops down to creek at an old mill site then veers away, crosses a small stream on a plank then returns to Cadman at another old mill site.  A small falls is just upstream.  The trail then pulls way from the creek, crosses a small stream on another plank, then climbs to an open reforested area before reaching County Line Rd, a mile to the start.  This new trail thru the county forest is ~3 miles long.  To the N of the road pink tape marks a route into the Hennig Preserve.  2.3 hours.

Dec 9, 2012 - HENNIG PRESERVE hike in western Saratoga County.  Preserve mostly at 1,300'-1,600' elevation.  3.5 miles of trails N of County Line Rd - mix of hardwoods (maple, beech, black cherry, yellow birch) & softwoods (mostly hemlock & large white pine).  Red trail at the far NE of the preserve leads to boggy Round Pond.  2.5 miles of trails S of County Line Rd - mostly softwoods.  Left the green trail to walk on Packer Rd (an old 4WD trail) then L on another 4WD trail going over a snowmobile? bridge into Homestead County Forest.  Returned to green trail.  Blue trail goes up onto the top of an esker.  Lots of ferns & clubmosses.  ~8 miles, 4.4 hours.  For xc skiing: yellow trail novice, rest of trails intermediate, couple of steep spots on blue trail.  Drove over to Glenwild Rd & walked up Packer Rd a bit then bushwhacked back along picturesque Cadman Creek.

The Bear Slides on Butternut Brook is a half mile hike from the river at Darlings Ford. In summer, tubing is popular in the 2nd half of this trip. Oct 20, 2021 - Hadley gauge at 3.8' - a very nice level.  Sunny & temp rising into the lower 70s.  Some very nice fall foliage in the yellow/orange range but past peak for reds.  Moving water, fast water, riffles up to 1' - the current made it easy to keep a 3.5-4mph pace.  Steep hills on both sides.  Bald eagles, lots of Canada geese, a lone merganser.  14.5 miles, 5 hours (incl an hour-long lunch break near 1000 Acres Ranch).  However, what may have been a perfect day of paddling was diminished by a reminder that not all folks are having an awesome day - enough said - details below but BE WARNED , it ain't pretty . *After paddling downstream for 10 minutes, we spotted some debris on river R that looked like some clothing, a dummy, or something.  After a closer look, it was determined to be a de...

KAYADEROSSERAS CREEK paddling, Saratoga County NY

Kayaderosseras Creek and Lake Lonely Outlet. The Kayaderosseras is a lovely meandering lowland stream. The 3-mile stretch between the Northway (I-87) and Saratoga Lake is often paddled, and a side trip up and down Lake Lonely Outlet can add another couple of miles. A good access point is a small beach at Waterfront Park on Crescent Ave. This does require paddling along the north side of Saratoga Lake for a half mile to reach the mouth of the “K” - this may be undesirable on a windy day or during the height of the motorboating season.  An alternate put-in, just upstream from the mouth of the creek, can be found at the Arrowhead Casino Archaeological Preserve at the end of Arrowhead Road, 0.7 miles from Crescent Ave. You will have to carry your boat along a trail for up to 200 yards and it is likely to be muddy, although possibly less so slightly downstream to the left. HENDERSON LAKE, PRESTON PONDS & DUCK HOLE canoeing.

June 2021 - The carry to Henderson Lake is now 0.1 miles longer because the old parking area has been closed & there is a new parking area that is a bit further south. Sep 14, 2014 - HENDERSON LAKE.  Easy 0.3 mile carry from Upper Works trailhead.  Explored the S inlet, Santanoni Brook & Indian Pass Brook.  Awesome High Peaks views.  Foliage ~20% change, mostly red & purple maples.  Very little wildlife, no bad bugs.  Saw just 1 kayak & 2 pack canoes.  7.8 miles, 4.4 hours. Aug 4 & 5, 2013 - HENDERSON LAKE, PRESTON PONDS, DUCK HOLE canoe camping, from Upper Works trailhead Sunday: Wheeled canoe & gear (incl. comfy chair) 0.3 mi. to the put-in on Henderson Checked out all 3 designated campsites (none occupied) before deciding on the southeasterly one.
