SHELVING ROCK MOUNTAIN & SHELVING ROCK FALLS hiking

Dec 9, 2021 - SHELVING ROCK MOUNTAIN & FALLS hike. Shelving Rock Road is fairly steep & my driver did not like the way it looked so we parked at the Hogtown trailhead (1,200' el) for Buck Mtn. & walked down the road. Some nice brook views along the way, especially at Campsite #12. Took a R at parking area #2 (500') on Big Bridges Trail next to Shelving Rock Brook for 0.9 miles, then L on Shortway Trail. After ~1 mile started climbing moderately up the mountain, lot of switchbacks keeps it from getting very steep. A little before the summit (1,130') not much in the way of views from there) took a R on a path for ~100 yards dropping down to a ledge with very nice views over Lake George. Headed back down & took the short 0.2-mile way back to the road, 1.5 miles from the lookout. 0.4-mile trail to the very scenic falls, then lime paint blazes to below the falls for the best view. Up & up the road back to the car. The trails in this area are on old carriage roads, so fairly easy walking. 1.5" of snow - brought spikes but did not use. 10+ miles, 5.5 hours.

Sat May 8, 2021 - unfortunately, many hikers' cars broken into at trailheads - heard of 10 cars broken into at the Hogtown & Shelving Rock Rd/Buck Mtn trailheads in the Adirondacks & 3 cars broken into at the Slide Mtn trailhead in the Catskills - do not leave anything of value in your car! — feeling sad.

June 6, 2019 - SHELVING ROCK MOUNTAIN loop. Lake George WF. From parking area #4. 1.6 miles to the summit on old carriage road with switchbacks - mostly smooth & dry; a few mosquitoes on the way up - limited views from actual summit. 600'+ ascent. Best view is from a ledge at 1.5 miles, 120' below summit (1,020' el.), take an unmarked path down to the R for a hundred yards. A turkey vulture swooped in close. Only ~5 motorboats on the lake on a lovely Thursday.
Back down a bit, then E on red trail 0.3 miles, R at the T on blue Ridge Trail for 0.8 miles thru nice hemlock woods, rolling terrain. Straight on red trail for 1/3 mile which makes a hairpin turn then climbs thru small beeches with open ledges (1,140') on the R with views - cliffs on Sleeping Beauty, Buck Mtn & Lake George. No bad bugs. Flowering: cinquefoil & blueberries (good feasting in a month). Backtrack 1/3 mile & took a L on red trail going downhill - hordes of mosquitoes! for 0.7 miles. R on red/yellow trail to loop back to start. Black flies not an issue. 5.8 miles, 3.6 hours.

May 2, 2019 - SHELVING ROCK FALLS & LAKE GEORGE loop hike, from Shelving Rock Rd. On old carriage roads of the Knapp Estate, now Lake George Wild Forest. Nice views across Lake George to Sagamore Hotel & Cat Mtn. There is archeological evidence that people lived here 6,000 years ago. Canada geese were honking (it's nesting time) & a loon wailed. Saw only 2 motorboats - fairly quiet for LG. 4 miles.
