Dec 2024 - The state forest is undergoing a radical change. Last year they began logging, actually clear cutting, the western end of the forest and leaving all the slash.  According to the posting at the Kiosk, they are in the process of removing the Red Pine forest which was planted in the 30's. The long-term plan is for a regrowth of a hardwood forest. This year they have begun clearing the eastern section. They claim that they are going to keep the trails/roads open but the idea of skiing through clearcut and slash isn't very appealing. Feb 2022 - OSI acquires land to the SE of Rockwood SF - info .   Note: When there is a lot of snow, the 5.5-mile Prospect Mtn Veterans Memorial Highway is open for snowmobiling so, if you want a quieter ski, pick a day when there are just a few inches of snow (6" is nice).  Check this site to see if open to snowmobiles . March 14, 2026 - PROSPECT MOUNTAIN xc ski. A good option in low snow conditions. Carried the skis up the steep red trail (0.5" of snow) to the toll road and skied up from there. 2" of fresh powder on a variable icy base. 3" powder above 1200' el. Had some decent uphill glide. Low 30s, mostly cloudy, Gusty winds. Had the summit to myself for 45 minutes, found a dry picnic table for a quick lunch and hot coffee. No High Peaks view today, could not even see Black Mtn at first. Not too fast going down, the wind had blown the powder off in a couple of places.
