Aug 27 - Sep 4, 2006. ALGONQUIN PROVINCIAL PARK canoe camping in Ontario. Nice weather for 6 days then showers Sep 2 evening & Sep 3. Light mosquito activity except at Tim River campsite & portages. Took 4 to 6 hours to get from one campsite to the next. Loons everywhere. A hint of fall - maples starting to change color, some yellow on the cedars. Singled most of the portages thanks to Hunnee. Hunnee & Nehasane tandem in Kipawa, Enjnir in a Bell Bucktail & Rongwae in a Bell Merlin II. Swift Kipawa, perhaps the most respected modern Canadian 16'6" tandem canoe ( the Chestnut Prospector would be the most respected older design); the one we used is a Carbon Fusion model weighing 43 lbs. Feb 29, 2020 - ROCK RIVER & ROCK LAKE. Blue Mtn WF. Only 1-3" powder on 2' base - the trail had a frozen snowshoe trough which was not great for skiing steeper sections but off-trail in the hardwoods was pretty nice skiing, overall good to very good skiing. Temp in the mid-teens. Rock River Trail drops 300' in the first half mile, then L on snowmobile trail for 100 yards then R on the red trail. Short detour to the lake (could see Sawyer Mtn to the S but could not see Blue Mtn) then rolling terrain with a final steep drop to the river at 3 miles. Followed the riverbank upstream the whole way to the lake, much of the time on firm ice shelves (fun) but sometimes into spruce/fir woods (not much fun) - the scenery was superb, the biggest falls/rapid was mostly iced-over. Crossed the lake & picked up the trail again. CASCADE POND 10/3/19 - The 3-mile red trail via Rock Pond had a fair amount of mud & blowdown. A helicopter landed on Cascade Pond in the Blue Ridge Wilderness, stayed ~5 minutes - possibly the state stocking fish. Colors are at peak & maple leaves are falling, Whiteface reported some snow!!! It will be past peak in the Adks over Columbus Day weekend which is on the late side this year. Feb 22, 2017 - NPT thru the Lake Durant Campground into the Blue Ridge Wilderness. After 2 miles took a L on unofficial path to SP. Skied along the pond with view of Blue Ridge to lean-to site. NPT uphill N to junction then L to CP. Checked out the outlet cascade then to the lean-to, no-one had written in the logbook this year. Skied S on the pond for the view N to Blue Mtn. Mostly downhill on way back. ~20" of heavy wet snow - skiing ok but slow, hard to turn in untracked snow, sunk in ~3"; NPT to SP had light snowshoe use. Elevations 1,800'-2,200'. 9.3 m...
